Alchemy Arts Center on San Juan Island, WA
My dear friends Maria Michaelson and Eben Shay started this amazing non-profit art center in 2018. They and their team among the most resourceful, original, hands-on creators and teachers you will find anywhere.
Maria Melito Carr In Port Townsend, WA
Maria Carr has been a friend and inspiration for over a decade. She has a powerful connection with the waters and fisheries of Alaska, and brings her sense of adventure and electric powers as an artist to every aspect of life.
Handprint Press Kiko Denzer In Philomath, OR
I have known Kiko since I was a small child and we were neighbors in Harlan, OR. He has been a great friend and mentor over the years, and one of the primary influences that led me to seek a deeper artistic connection with the earth and all the ways of living close to it.
Glenn Hendrick on San Juan Island, WA. Glenn is an old friend and an artist/farmer/musician renaissance woman. Her visual creations combine bold motifs with a mystical sense of the spirits of wild nature, places, and people.
Brad Hughes, artist in Homer, AK
I began taking one-on-one painting, drawing, and sculpture lessons from Brad while I was a teenager, and over the subsequent years he became a wonderful mentor and friend. Brad has captured the unique landscapes, creatures and colors of Kachemak Bay like no one else.
From 2014-2016 I had the good fortune to be Matthew's studio assistant in Friday Harbor, WA, and learned a great deal from him. Matthew is a 21st-century Michaelangelo, combining the consummate mastery of form with a vital energy that is completely unique.
Bunnell Street Arts Center in Homer, AK
During my time in Homer I found great inspiration in the unique artists, shows, and collaborations that Asia Freeman has brought to this small community over the years.
Southeast Alaska Farmers Summit
The 2023 Summit in Petersburg was an informative and energizing event that brought together passionate growers from all over the rugged terrain of our region. This organization is a great resource for anyone who is serious about growing crops and livestock here and I am greatly looking forward to the next summit.
Marja Smets and Bo Varsano have been growing widely reknowned produce at their remote farm in Farragut Bay for years, as well as cultivating support for farming via the above organization. Their insights were what initially led us to look Point Agassiz as a place to farm.
Beyond the War on Invasive Species: A Permaculture Approach to Ecosystem Restoration
Tao Orion's book has been a much-needed exploration of a deeper ecological understanding of what weeds do and how we can manage them sensibly. I highly recommend it.
Tao and her husband Abel Kloster are friends and fellow Oregonians, and the vital work they do in restoring and rebuilding healthy landscapes is a huge inspiration to me.
David Holmgren has been a major influence on my approach to working on the land and building productive systems for humans to live in.
